On February 24, 2022 Vladimir Putin launched a full scale invasion of the country Ukraine. It started a new chapter in the eight-year war in the country's east. Ukraine always wanted to be an independent country, but was always denied by the Soviet Union. Then when the Soviet Union collapsed they finally declared themselves as independent. Russia let them become independent in exchange for the missiles that were being held in Ukraine. In 2014, Ukraine was invaded and Russia took over their land in the Crimean Peninsula.
Since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000, he has been obsessed with restoring Russia to it’s “national greatness.” Putin saw many advantages that would help him invade Ukraine without having repercussions from other countries. He also wanted to keep Ukraine from finding a common cause with the democracies in Europe and was concerned that if his people saw that they could function independently, they too would rise up against him.
Since then the war is still being fought to keep Ukraine’s freedom. However, American and European countries ruled out sending troops in to help Ukraine. They did make the decision to send money, weapons, and diplomatic support. Ukraine was trying to get into NATO in order to get protection from larger states so that other countries would not invade them.
Unfortunately, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has lasted over a year and is still continuing. There is an arrest warrant issued for Vladimir Putin and from the news today, he has recently traveled outside of Russia, which is the first time since the war.
